Shon Owens Unity Week
About Shon Owens Unity Week in Beaver County
Shon D. Owens Sr., founder of the Beaver County Unity Week/Games, passed on May 26, 2023. On July 13, 2023 the Board of Commissioners of Beaver County declared this will now be the Shon Owens Unity Week and the Shon Owens Unity Games.
In 2020, the Board of Commissioners of Beaver County issued a proclamation setting aside a week of unity. The Commissioners established an annual week of unity, designating the second week in July as Unity Week in Beaver County. Unity Week in Beaver County Celebration is a week-long gathering to connect, celebrate and advance the existing good powered by a joint initiative between Inclusion, Diversity and Awareness Council (IDAC), and the Beaver County Community and Law Enforcement Coalition (BCCLEC), dedicated to unifying Beaver County citizens through courageous conversations, a unity walk/vigil/pledge, and ending the week with our annual unity games an event filled day designed to build and maintain community and law enforcement relationships.

Uniting Through Action and Beyond:
Monday
-
Wear something Black for unifying Beaver County
-
Make a connection with someone outside your circle.
-
Work to create dialogue and meaningful change in our community that is representative of all people.
Tuesday
-
Wear something Yellow for optimism, enthusiasm, happiness, and positivity.
Wednesday
-
Wear something orange—as a tangible representation of the supportive, universal message that our society wants kindness, acceptance, and inclusion.
Thursday
-
Wear green for harmony, healing, hope, and compassion
Friday
-
Wear red for continued strength and positive attention to unifying Beaver County.
-
On Friday, you are invited to pause for 10 minutes of quiet reflection, on unity. Take time to breathe, separate from the monotony and focus on how you can help make Beaver County more unified.
Saturday
-
Wear Blue for peace, compromise, empathy and trust between police officers and community members.
The relationship of the police to the community should be harmonious both ways. The community relies upon the police department to “protect and serve” and the police, in return, rely upon community support and cooperation in order to be effective. When communication and trust deteriorate, tensions build between the community and police and undermine their shared goal of safer communities.
